Class Schedule

At Top Hat Dance Centre, Inc., we do not post a schedule of classes.  Unlike many other dance studios, THDCI has developed a tried and true class placement process over the last 38+ years.  We pride ourselves in knowing how to place children in the correct learning environment in order to challenge students, while continuing to foster their joy and love of dance.

If an evaluation class is needed in order to place a new dancer in the correct level, arrangements will be made by a Director.  If you need information regarding a specific age group, you may contact us via phone or email.

Styles of Dance at THDCI

Ballet

Ballet is the basis, or foundation, of all dance. Ballet provides dancers with all of the tools needed to be in control of their body no matter what form or style on which they choose to concentrate.  A dancer is not “a dancer” without ballet training. Every student enrolled at THDCI is required to take at least one ballet class per week.

Pointe

En pointe (pointe) is a form of ballet presented on the tips of the toes, made possible by specialized pointe shoes. There are different varieties of ballet en pointe, but for the most part they focus on grace and specific technique.  It is an advanced form of ballet training that requires specific pre-requisites.

Tap

Tap dance is the most widely recognized style of dance. Tap teaches rhythmic movement, musicality, and agility.

Jazz

Jazz Dance is the most versatile style in dance. Jazz Dance includes everything from Swing Dance to the current movement that is seen in music videos and live shows today. Today’s Jazz is usually choreographed using contemporary music that you hear on the radio. It is athletic and promotes strength, flexibility, balance, agility, and grace. THDCI has a terrific Jazz program with a wide variety of styles.

Lyrical & Contemporary

Lyrical & Contemporary dance is a genre of concert dance that employs systems and methods found in both modern and postmodern dance, as well as classical ballet and classical jazz.

Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop is generally made up of what is widely known as Funk, Break Dancing, Popping, and Locking. While some of these styles originated on the streets of New York, the larger part of Hip-Hop that you see today was developed on the West Coast. The style is incredibly aerobic and often you see Hip-Hop dancers dancing in normal street clothes instead of dancewear. Hip-Hop is fun and exciting and requires no formal dance training to enjoy it.

Other Classes We Offer

Improv Acting

Improvisation, a spontaneous form of theatre, is one of the oldest styles in modern theatre. This acting course is taught through theatre games, and is the foundation essential for all actors. Constant themes throughout this course encourage trusting oneself, taking risks, and being positive. These classes build confidence and are valuable for both the student who wishes to further their Acting career, and the student who just wants to have fun.

Lifts and Partnering

Lifts and Partnering classes are another unique class for THDCI. Since we have such a large group of guys, we are able to take time to train the girls and the guys in the proper techniques of partnering. It also gives us a chance to train the students in the correct way to spot lifts so that they can help each other stay safe.

Stretch Seminar

During THDCI’s Stretch Seminar, dancers spend extra time stretching, discussing injury prevention, learning names and functions of different muscle groups, practicing Pilates techniques, learning strength training exercises important for dancers, and much more. THDCI’s Stretch Seminar can be compared to a “study hall” of sorts since the dancers are encouraged to bring in questions from their other classes during the week for special attention and further explanation.
